When you are running your own car you really should change the car oil once every 3 months, or 3000 miles. Whenever you hit either of these barriers you need to change your motor oil to prevent image damage.

So here at latest how to guides we will show you how to change your motor oil. Remember by doing an oil change yourself you could be saving yourself a lot of money!

1) Raise your car off the ground. You should do this with a jack, placed as per your car manual instructions. If possible place a stand to stop your car falling down on top of you!

2) Find a pan to drain your oil in to. This is generally called a drain pan.

3) Now you will need to get down under the car and search for your oil pan, this is usualy black and located under the engine. Somewhere under the pan you will find the oil pan plug.

4) Place your drain pan under the oil pan and unscrew the oil pan plug.

5) Keep the drain pan underneath the oil pan until it has finished draining.

How to remove Oil Filter

6) While the oil is draining search for the oil filter and remove it. You may need an oil filter remover to take this out. Oil filter removers come in several forms but generally look something like this. Once removed place it in the drain pan with the excess oil.

7) Now you have removed the motor oil and the oil filter you need to pick up your new motor oil filter.

Take the new oil filter and lube the rubber seal gasket with the new motor oil. Put the new oil filter in to the slot and hand tighten the oil filter. Don’t use a tool for this, if you tighten it too far it can cause problems.

9) Replace the oil pan plug with your fingers and tighten it with a box wrench.

10) Remove the car supports and lower the car jack down, then open up the car hood.

11) Look for the car’s motor oil plugged, this nis nearly always marked with the words ‘Motor Oil’

12) Pour in the amount of motor oil specified in the car’s user manual.

13) Start the car and leave it running for around 5 minutes. After this pull out the car’s oil dip stick and check that it is between the low and full values. Some older car models just have two lines to signify this.

14) If the oil level is too far towards ‘low’ then top it up, otherwise you are ready to go! Remember to dispose of the used motor oil at the proper facility, do not just tip it in to the garden, or kitchen sink!
